Blankney Farm Update – 27 April 2022
This spring started with a warm March, which has helped our crops develop. Spring establishment of our vining peas, dried peas, spring beans, spring barley and sugar beet have all progressed well and on time.
Dry weather this month is causing concern as the recently planted crops start to suffer moisture stress – we need a good rain!
Maize crops have started drilling and our new 12 row Horsch drill is performing well.
Grass harvesting started on the 12 April and in the cold conditions, has been steady so far.
The headline for this year is to maximise our output from our drying plant, but at the same time, controlling our energy costs by maximising the use of biomass derived heat – this will improve our carbon emissions by reducing our fossil fuel use.
