Blankney Farm Update – 8 September 2022
Following the completion of our cereal harvest for 2022, we have now begun establishing our winter cover crops. 380ha of cover has been established, which will assist with helping the soils retain nutrients and preventing nitrate loss into the underlying aquifer.
Recent rains have improved our grass production quality and yields; they have also improved the prospect of a better sugar harvest.
Land preparation is now ongoing for our winter cereal crops and soils are working well.
Our Maize harvest started this week and unfortunately, early indications would suggest a 20-30% yield reduction following the dry summer.
If you would describe your farming harvest as a picture painted on canvas every year – then this year, we are looking forward to tearing it up and starting afresh next year!
